Western’s Figure Skating Club held an open skate night for the public Saturday, Feb. 26. at Jorgensen Ice Rink. The event was a fundraiser for the club, as well as a way to drive public engagement.

“It went really great; better than we expected,” says Club President Alexandra Weatherill, reporting a solid turnout of both students and community members. The club raised over $150 from the bake sale at the event. One of the highlights of the night was a “trick competition.”

The club invited all present to come to center ice to perform a trick of their own invention on skates. The winner, Carter Baker, performed a spin on hockey skates followed by a series of yo-yo tricks.

The club has two more weeks of ice before their season wraps up when Jorgensen Ice Rink closes. They will regroup next October or November with the hope of producing an ice show. Representatives of the club will be at the Club Sports Fair this Friday (March 4) from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Mountaineer Field House.
