The mighty Gunnison River

The Sunni Gunni Costume Float & River Celebration is a community celebration of the Gunnison River that will feature art, recreation, education and self-expression. Held at the Gunnison Whitewater Park on Saturday, Aug. 26, the event will kick off at 9 a.m.

The festive river celebration is intended to spread awareness among all Gunnison River users on topics of safety, water conservation, river etiquette and stewardship, so that everyone can become a river hero.

Participants are encouraged to come dressed in their best river hero costume — and a face painter will also be present to help people get into the river spirit!

Anyone who shows up to the event in costume will receive swag, and all participants will be treated to vendors, music, games, a raffle, and a taco truck.

For those interested in getting on the water, a community float will begin at the Shady Island Put-In at 10 a.m. Additional information about securing a $10 ticket and waiver can be found on the event page.

Finally, free river clinics with be hosted by the Gunnison Kayak Program, with a free swiftwater clinic from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and a kayak roll clinic from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
