Western’s low-flying dance trapeze class prepares for its final showcase, an aerial dance interpretation of Mary Poppins, the culminating element of the class’s theater movement curriculum.
To top off a semester of aerial dance and expression, COM 317: Trapeze Dance and Movement will present a showing of Mary Poppins on trapeze on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. The show, taking place in the Studio Theater, (next to the Welcome Center in Taylor Hall) is free for all.
All students in the class are working to put on the production, either as dancers in the show or working behind the scenes on the tech, costumes, and videography that make the production possible.
A special topics theater course, the course explores movement, bodily awareness, and storytelling through the medium of low-flying dance trapeze, an aerial apparatus that the class’s professor, Steven Cole Hughes, has trained extensively on.
No trapeze, theater, or dance experience is required, and students come from an astounding variety of majors and dance experience levels.
